Shipwreck

Natalie invited me to her Kindergarten classroom this morning. I was more than happy to go and volunteer in the classroom and get to know her friends a little better. I had a really great time and felt like it was a great opportunity for me, as a nanny, to learn what things I should focus on this summer while school is out. I got to observe quiet independent reading, calendar time, "Eclipse,"(a time to share with the class how you're feeling) recess, math, free choice time, lunch, and my favorite activity by far "Shipwreck!" A game the class has been learning all year.

Here is the game for those who are interested, any teacher's out there feel free to take notes! :)

The the kids line up on the middle line of the gym. Both ends of the gym have been given a name, Stern and Bow. One side of the gym is the Port, the kids are the "crew."

The teacher starts yelling out commands like:

"Crew to the stern" (the kids run to the end of the gym that is the stern)
"Crew skip to the bow"
"Crew hop to the port"
Once they have done this few times the teachers starts saying things like:

"Crew to the stern" and when the kids are halfway there he yells, "Hit the deck!" all the kids drop to the floor! Hilarious!! Sometimes after this the teacher will yell "Give me some push-ups!"

Other commands:

"Man over board" (curl up in a ball)
"To the galley" (sit with three or four friends and pretend to eat)
"Raise the Main Sail (report to the port and hoist the main sail)
"About face!" (turn 180 degree from where you are)
"At Ease!"
As the year has progressed the kids have learned new commands and new vocabulary! If you ever do a command incorrectly you are sent to the Brig for a few minutes.
Such a great imaginative play activity for Kindergartner's! They loved it and I loved it!
