Jr. Youth

There is a scene in Children of Men when a bomb explodes outside a cafe.  The noise from the explosion is so loud that the films audio track becomes a ringing sound.  Julian (played by the great Julianne Moore) then says, "Y'know that ringing in your ears?  That 'eeeeeeeeeee'? That's the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song.  Once it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again.  Enjoy it while it lasts."

Well, I have been experiencing my ear cells swan song the past few weeks.  It all started a couple weeks ago at the Capitol Hill Block Party.

After watching sets from Pela, The Thermals, The Gossip and Truckasauras from a comfortable distance I was determined to get as close as possible to the stage to witness the legendary Sonic Youth.  I don't know what I was thinking.  I've seen SY before and they were extremely loud but I was too excited.  I was more concerned with seeing Thurston, Kim and company up close than I was for the health of my ears.  My friend and I made it as close as one could get without being smashed up against the stage.

To give you an image the stage was on the east side of the Broadway and Pike intersection with the crowds lined up in that relatively narrow corridor.  This set up allowed for the music and the reverb to be extra loud, just bouncing around all over us.  SY played a fairly long set, it's hard to be completely familiar with a group who has over 15 albums but I managed to recognize two or three songs through the noise.  The concert was pure rock and roll spectacle ending with Thurston and Lee smashing their guitars into one another like swords.  I couldn't ask for more, except maybe earplugs.

I got home pretty late (early) and had to get up at 6 for a church meeting.  When I woke up my entire head was buzzing.  I poured myself a bowl of Crispix and sat down for breakfast.  I was only able to make it through two or three spoonfuls before I had to quit.  The crunching noise I was making was too loud and was hurting my ears.  I realized that I had a problem.  I hoped that I would regain my hearing by the next day but no dice.  In fact it wasn't until about five days later that I began to notice my hearing improve.

Well, the next Saturday another 90s gem, Dinosaur Jr. was playing a free show at the Space Needle.  I was very excited to see DJ and was hoping that my ears would be up for more loud noise.  I have been listening to DJ since my brother Adam introduced me to them in '94.  We had a copy of Where You Been that we wore out while listening to it all summer.  Again, as with Sonic Youth, I was fully aware that this was going to be an exceptionally loud show but I neglected to bring ear plugs (where do you get those anyway?).  When we arrived at the Space Needle I instinctively made my way to the front of the stage like a mouse to cheese on a trap.  It only took about two minutes into the opener, "Bulbs of Passion", before I realized that we needed to move far away or I could cause some permanent damage to my ears.  We went to the back of the lawn and watched the rest of the show at a reasonable distance and you know what... It was just fine, I guess I need to remember that there can be too much of a good thing.  The bad news is that as I write this my ears still hurt and I received a text message from my friend telling me that his ears still don't feel the same as before.

As I was watching the show and they were playing some of the songs that I remember listening to as a kid I looked up and saw the Space Needle. I thought to myself that if 26 year old Ben were able visit 12 year old Ben and tell him that he would eventually be living in Seattle, going to UW, be at a Dinosaur Jr. concert in the shadow of the Space Needle, and married to a super cool girl, 12 year old Ben would faint with joy.

¡Aye Carumba!

Light Rail

Natalie, Andrew, William and I embarked on an adventure today!  We decided to try out Seattle's new Light Rail.  The kids were excited to ride the bus downtown and explore the city.  Natalie's mom helped me plan the trip, ( her job deals directly with Seattle's transit) while we were planning she invited us to stop by her office.  The kids went CRAZY over the idea of visiting Jamie at work!
Natalie and Andrew on the bus, heading to Jamie's office.  Our bus went over the Aurora Bridge, and since we were sitting up so high the kids had a great view of the city.  They said they saw a volcano (Mt. Rainier) but then Natalie explained to the whole bus that it wasn't active.  "It was a sleeping volcano," I think were her exact terms.
In the transit tunnel waiting for the light rail to come.  The kids were decked out in flashing lights and bright orange backpack's, swag from Jamie's work! :)
On the light rail!  In the tunnels "where the ninja turtles live!"

The kids were glued to the windows the entire time we were on the light rail.

Natalie and Andrew trying to spot Ninja Turtles in the tunnels.
We got off the light rail at the Othello station, located in the Rainier Beach area.  A friend of mine clued me in on a park that was 2 blocks away from the station.  We walked to the park and had lunch, afterwards the kids had a blast on this giant slide!
Andrew's bob sled moves.
Best Friends!  Today was Andrew's last full day with us, he starts kindergarten next Monday.  My feelings are very mixed about him going to school.  (I think his mom feels the same!)  We will still see Andrew on random school holidays and half days, but when I saw this picture of the two of them I got a little sad.  Natalie and Andrew have been inseparable since the day Andrew joined our little nanny family.  (I think he was 18 month old.)  People always ask if they are twins when we are out not because they look alike, but they seem know each other so well.  In some ways I think they have a twin like bond.  Andrew we are very excited for you and happy that our time with you isn't over, we'll just have more time between visits!

Don't Stop Believin'!

I am very excited for Glee a comedy/musical starting this fall on FOX. They previewed the pilot last May and Ben and I tuned in. At the very end of the episode the Glee Club is practicing their latest number. They sing Journey's, "Don't Stop Believin'." I though it was great and was humming the tune the following day. Later they released the Glee Club's version of the song on iTunes and I decided to purchase it! I introduced the song to the kids I nanny for and they've loved it... I've also discovered Lydia and the rest of the McDougall clan love singing it as well.

Last week I was in Bed, Bath, and Beyond (or as Ben calls it, Bad Breath and Beyond) with Andrew and the original song came on in the store. Andrew started rocking out, I spotted a 15-ish year old boy playing air guitar and lip syncing the song, followed by a sighting of a BBB employee singing along as she re-shelved towels. I felt like I was in a musical!

I'm hoping the reason why so many people of ALL ages know this song is they've caught the Glee bug. Watch the video and get excited for the shows return on September 9th!

Frozen to Scorched in 5 Minutes Flat

Dear Frozen Pizza,

What happened?  I placed you in the 450 degree oven and walked away for 5 minutes.  When I came back to check on you I was saddened to see that you were burnt beyond repair.  No matter of "scraping off the burnt pieces" would help revive you into the delicious frozen pizza I was hoping to consume.  Was the oven too hot?  Your box said "450 degrees."  Should I have placed you on my pizza stone rather than directly on the rack?  I promise to keep a closer eye on you next time!

Sincerely,

Hungry Tummy

P.S.  Sorry for the unsightly photo.

Doobee-Doobee-Doo

While watching The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien the other night I was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite characters from The Office do a little 'bit' on scat singing. I am a big jazz fan but unless you are Ella Fitzgerald or more recently Tierney Sutton (two of my favorite "scatters") scatting just looks funny! Enjoy! It's silly!

July Jam

It's that time of year to pick berries and make some delicious jam! I cheated this round, I bought a flat of raspberries at one of the local farmers markets. I do plan to make some black berry jam this weekend and I will be picking those berries in my parents back yard. (Or close to it!) The first time I made cooked jam it was a total disaster, I didn't know what I was getting into. I was at my mom's house and I was boiling the berries, adding pectin, reading directions, and trying to get the boiling water going all at the same time. My pot-o-boiling berries started to boil over and it was like raging lava flowing all over my mom's range. I am happy to report since that traumatic experience I have mastered the art of jam making and haven't had any berry lava since. Yes that's 7 cups of SUGAR!!!!!

We Won't Forget About You or Now That You've Left

Today is a sad day. 1980s (and early 90s) icon John Hughes has passed away at the age of 59. Last month the web was replete with sentiments of how Michael Jackson defined the 1980s. MJ didn't do much for me but the cannon of Mr. Hughes was very important to my social and cultural development. Sure, I was not a teenager when he made his best work so I can't say that his films were a reflection of my experience. I can say, however, that I approached junior high and high school with the expectation that my experience was supposed to be like it was in Sherman, Ill. What I liked the most about Hughes was that he was one of the grown ups who "got it." He seemed to have a knack for what it was like to be a teenager who didn't fit in. It didn't matter what side of the proverbial track you lived on he wrote about teens with a sincerity that was appreciated. Although his films are very funny he also approached adolescence with a sense of seriousness that made you feel like perhaps you were not that much of an outsider. I'm sure over the next couple of days we are going to be reading heightened accounts of how important Hughes was and then we will get the inevitable backlash about how he shouldn't be praised. So for now while my thoughts are still fresh I thought I would bid a fond farewell:)
Btw for what it's worth I watched Pretty in Pink again two weeks ago and it still holds up. Who's up for a marathon?
